Culture of Alaska/USA
From my point of view, i can see big differents between my culture from back in germany and here in Juneau, AK.
In germany it's absolutely no problem to enjoy a beer in the afternoon, even for us students after school. Drinking is allowed at 114, if your parents/guardians give it to you. At the age of 16 you can buy it on your own, but just beer and "low" alcohol drinks. At the age of 18 you can finally buy "hard" alcohol a.k.a. wodka, wine and other stuff.
Here in america, every kind of alcohol is strictly prohibited for people under 21. It's still allowed if the parents give it to you, but the most adults I've met here are very conservative, often even really behind the time.
The consume of drugs like weed and other stuff seems to be higher in the USA than in Germany, even it's exists over there. I've never met high people in Germany, not to mention in school. Here in Juneau Alaska, I've already met them in school.
I like the "car-policy" here in the USA. Because the people-per-squaremile in the entire USA is way lower than in Germany and Cities and Towns tend to be very large, a car, often 2 per family, is required. And since that, people are allowed o drive at 14, with one adult and on their own at the age of 16.
In Germany, you can make your license at 16, use it with one adult at 17 and drive on the own at 18.
About the topic conservative...
In the USA, it seems like the parents are strictly against sex or other sexual actions about the children. It's even "hard" to just have a movie night with a girl. In Germany on the other hand, no one cares about that and thinks that (if they are 15 or 16) they are old enough to take care of themselves and pick the right partner. Parents would have no problems with the son/daughter having sex in his/her room (as long they use protection).
There are other differents in the cultures but too much to explain them :)
